The New Year has arrived!
It’s 2020 and all things are possible! The holidays are over which means
that it’s time to think about your goals and dreams for the coming year.

This does not have to mean joining a gym and losing some
weight (although those are great goals).
New Year’s resolutions are about making change, and change can be
extremely difficult for many people.

Tips For Making Change Stick:

Define your goal clearly. Set a realistic goal
and time line to complete it. If you shoot for the stars at the start, you risk
giving up early.

Spend time contemplating why you have chosen
this goal. If it’s too hard and not
really that important to you, odds are you’ll give up.

Figure out how to be accountable. Enlist a
friend or family member to keep you honest as you take the steps towards your
goal.

Reward yourself along your journey. Remember
that change is hard and every step towards your goal is a victory worth
celebrating.

Start each day with a 1 ounce shot of this antioxidant powerhouse. Regardless of your plans for the day, you will be starting out with a natural source of energy and nutrition on your side.

What is the Difference between Deodorant and Antiperspirant?

Deodorants are substances that mask, decrease or eliminate odors – usually associated with body odor. Deodorants come as ready-made products (usually stick or spray) and are typically marketed as natural and safe. They do not prevent sweating, instead they simply mask or change the odor associated with sweating.

Antiperspirants actually prevent sweating. They contain aluminum which is the active ingredient used to block sweat. The aluminum absorbs into the skin and when sweating begins to occur, the pH of your skin rises which causes the aluminum salts to precipitate out and they then literally plug up your pores so the sweat cannot come through.

Are Antiperspirants Bad For You?

There is scientific debate about the safety of applying a metal to your skin on pretty much a daily basis. Aluminum has been linked to dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease following routine “occupational” exposure to aluminum. Also, people with chronic kidney disease are not able to eliminate aluminum effectively so the metal will accumulate in the body. These patients have suffered from an illness known as “dialysis encephalopathy” or “dialysis dementia”. The illness was called this because the products used in dialysis used to contain high levels of aluminum. Thankfully, science has found a better solution and dialysis patients do not receive aluminum containing products any longer.

Knowing all of this information, I think that it is pretty
clear that it is at least a likelihood that applying aluminum on a daily basis
could cause negative health consequences.

But I Think I Smell Bad, so I Really Need Antiperspirant!

Eating a clean, healthy diet will change the smell of your
sweat. My brother-in-law had a brief but
intense fling with garlic. I’m talking
cooking with it constantly and taking garlic pills. I think he may have been
eating it raw as well. Well, believe me, he smelled like a head of garlic from
15 feet away. Sweat is just one way that
our body rids itself of toxins. Much of
science will argue that sweat is 99% water and that removing toxins from the
body is only accomplished via the kidneys and liver. Well, I’m a pharmacist so
I’ve spent some time with science and I still know that my brother-in-law
smelled like a garlic farm when he was over-consuming garlic, so clearly there
was more than water in his sweat.

The reality is that sweat is coming from inside your body to
the outside of your body and it will therefore represent how you treat the
inside of your body. If you drink
excessive alcohol, and smoke and eat garbage food, your sweat will not be
pleasant. If you eat a clean diet and
exercise and stay hydrated, you may not smell like a daisy but your sweat will
be more mild. As they say, what goes in must come out.

Using natural deodorant products will eliminate the exposure
to aluminum and taking care of your body will decrease the odor associated with
your sweat. There are also other natural
deodorizer solutions that you can use to naturally and safely decrease body
odor. Certain essential oils can work to assist in reducing body odor.

Coriander essential oil works as a natural deodorizer when used either topically or internally. When ingested it can reduce bad breath and the odor associated with sweat.

Tea Tree essential oil has significant antibacterial
properties. When applied topically it can reduce bacteria on the skin that
react with sweat causing an unpleasant smell.

Lemon works to lower the pH of the skin making it less
habitable for bacteria that can cause sweat to smell bad. Simply cut a lemon in half and rub it on your
armpit area. Doing this before bed is a
bit more user friendly and leaves you smelling fresh when you awake in the
morning.

There are many other natural ways to reduce body odor. If you are not much of a DIYer and prefer to just find a safe natural deodorant product that you can use without all the fuss, I absolutely love Young Living’s natural deodorants. They are loaded with essential oils that are strategically chosen for their abilities to help reduce body odor and formulated with healthy skin ingredients like coconut oil and vitamin E.

There is some debate scientifically as to whether everyone
should take a daily vitamin supplement.
Although a daily supplement should never replace a well-balanced,
healthy diet, there are many instances where supplements are of value.

Some research has shown that folic acid and B-complex
vitamins may reduce the risk of stroke. Also, the Physicians’ Health Study II,
published in 2012 by Harvard researchers, found that men who took a daily
multivitamin for 11 years had an 8% lower risk of cancer and a 9% lower risk of
cataracts compared with a placebo group.1

This article will focus on vitamin B complex, what it is,
what it does, and who needs to take it.

What is a Vitamin B Complex Supplement?

A Vitamin B Complex supplement is comprised of eight B vitamins. They include the following:

B-1 (thiamine)

B-2 (riboflavin)

B-3 (niacin)

B-5 (pantothenic acid)

B-6 (pyridoxine)

B-7 (biotin)

B-9 (folic acid)

B-12 (cobalamin)

What Role Do B Vitamins Play in the Body?

This complex of vitamins is instrumental in a variety of important body functions. These functions include cell health, the development of red blood cells, healthy eye function, proper nerve function, muscle tone, hormone and cholesterol development, energy levels, and more.2 The role of B vitamins in the body is vast, affecting almost every organ system in the body. Clearly then, a deficiency of B vitamins can have a variety of consequences for the body.

B vitamins are water-soluble and are found naturally in meats, eggs, legumes, whole grains, seeds/nuts, and some fortified cereals. A water-soluble vitamin is one that is carried to the body’s tissues but is not stored. They are removed from the body in urine and will need to be replaced daily to maintain healthy levels. Vitamin C is the other water-soluble vitamin.

How To I Get B Vitamins Without a Supplement?

Food sources that contain B Vitamins include fish and
shellfish, eggs, dairy, beef, liver, and chicken. Whole grains, legumes, seeds, and nutritional
yeast also contain some levels of B vitamins.

Since animal products are the main natural source of B vitamins, a vegan diet may be a risk factor for Vitamin B deficiency. Other risk factors for deficiency result from disease states that impair absorption such as alcohol dependence, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, inflammatory bowel disease, HIV and certain kidney conditions.

Some common medications can also decrease the levels of B vitamins in your body. These medications are:

Proton Pump Inhibitors (Prilosec, Prevacid, Protonix,
Nexium, Dexilant)

H2 receptor antagonists (Zantac, Pepcid, Tagamet,
Axid)

Metformin (Glucophage)

These are commonly used medications and chronic use should be considered a risk factor for Vitamin B deficiency.

The above risk factors should be considered if there are signs and symptoms that may indicate Vitamin B deficiency. People with vitamin B12 deficiency almost always need a supplement.1

What are the Signs of Vitamin B Deficiency?

Because the B vitamins play such a vast role throughout the
body, it is clear that maintaining healthy levels is important. Being able to
recognize the symptoms of Vitamin B deficiency and determining when supplementation
is necessary is an important step towards overall health.

Because B vitamins work in so many ways throughout the body, interpreting the signs of deficiency can be difficult.

Symptoms of B Vitamin Deficiency May Include:

Dry, scaly skin

Fatigue

Weakness

Depression or irritability

Nausea

Anemia

Numbness or tingling in the extremities

Because these symptoms can be vague and have other causes,
it is important to see a doctor if you are experiencing any or some of these
issues.

What Are the Long-Term Consequences of Vitamin B Deficiency?

Several health concerns can develop after a prolonged
deficiency of Vitamin B:

Anemia

Peripheral neuropathy

Neuropsychiatric disorders (particularly with
Vitamin B12 deficiency)

Digestive issues

Skin conditions

Increased birth defects in babies born to folic
acid deficient mothers

So we now know what B vitamins are, what they do and who is
at risk for deficiency. The next
question is how to determine what supplement to take.

There are many different Vitamin B products available over-the-counter. B vitamin deficiency associated with diseases such as Chrohn’s disease and kidney disease should be treated by a physician with prescription products. For the rest of the population, choosing a commercial Vitamin B Complex product can be overwhelming. It is important to choose a product that is high-quality with a formulation that allows for maximum absorption so that your money isn’t literally being flushed down the toilet. Young Living’s Super B tablets are formulated with all eight of the B vitamins. They use a natural folate derived from lemon peels and a more bioavailable form of Vitamin B12 called methylcobalamin. This product also contains chelated minerals such as magnesium, manganese, selenium, and zinc to support mood, cardiovascular, and cognitive health.

Health, wellness, and lifestyle coaching are relatively new
approaches to managing one’s health that have been growing in popularity over
the recent years. This idea of using a “coach”
to assist with health and wellness choices may seem a little radical to some
and certainly a nontraditional approach to many.

In my opinion, coaching is probably gaining popularity due
to changes in our healthcare system as a whole.
As access to traditional healthcare becomes more expensive and time
consuming, finding alternative ways to improve health and quality of life makes
sense.

Doctors today are pushed to see more and more patients each
day, leaving them with less and less time to spend with each patient. Pharmacies are swamped with more and more
prescriptions to fill and less and less staff to fill them, leaving the
pharmacist less accessible for questions and counseling. Considering these facts, the following
scenario and others like it are happening way too often.

–A middle-aged man waits for a month to get an appointment with his physician for a checkup and to review previously drawn blood work. Once in the examination room, the man gets only about 10 minutes of face time with his doctor. The doctor does an exam and reviews the results of his labs. He quickly notes the concerning numbers and makes his diagnosis. He lets the patient know that his labs indicate a concern of pre-diabetes and hypercholesterolemia. Also, his blood pressure was elevated when checked at the beginning of the appointment. The man receives his three new diagnoses.

High cholesterol – will need medication

Hypertension – will need medication

Prediabetes – will need medication

The doctor informs him that prescriptions will be electronically sent to his pharmacy and that he will need to make lifestyle changes to improve his current health.

The man leaves the doctor’s office and heads to the pharmacy to gather his new medication. When they are ready, he is asked if he has any questions for the pharmacist. What kind of questions? How would he even know what to ask? If the pharmacist is readily available, they can provide basic instructions and information on side effects but he is very overwhelmed and not really able to retain much of the information in his stressed state. He will return home with a bag of new medications and not much else.–

Obviously this is a fictitious scenario, but situations like
this happen every day and in many areas of healthcare. Unfortunately, when this happens the
likelihood of patient compliance and adherence to medications and other
therapies can be quite low. Patients may
decide to not take medications at all or take them incorrectly. Healthcare
workers have a tendency to tell patients what to do because they are anxious
for their health to improve, but studies show that people are more likely to
succeed at their goals if they are the ones making the choices about how to do
so.

Here is where a health coach steps in. A certified health coach, especially one with
a trained medical background, is able to guide a patient through the process of
learning about a health condition and educate and answer questions about new
medications and therapies. A health coach takes it even further by including
the patient in every step of their health journey. A health coach never tells you what to do,
they ask you what you think would work for you and assists you in making those
processes reality. All of these strategies are crucial to patient outcomes and
quality of life improvements.

Non-adherence is a term used in healthcare and is defined by
the following:

Not filling a prescription

Taking a lower dose of the medication prescribed

Taking “drug holidays” such as skipping doses on
the weekends or other times

Completely stopping 1 or more medications

Any or all of these, will result in treatment failure and
decreased quality of life.

A study was done called the PHARM-CHF trial. I will keep the boring details to a minimum but
this study is key to show the importance of interventions with patients.

237 chronic heart failure patients were randomly separated to
receive either “usual care” or pharmacist intervention. These patients were followed for a median of
2 years.

The pharmacist intervention consisted of the following
elements:

An initial medication review

A med plan was created

The pharmacist looked for interactions and
duplications

They spoke with the physician to make and
changes as needed

A pharmacist met with each patient every 6-8
days to discuss adherence, symptoms and assess blood pressure and pulse.

The pharmacist provided a pillbox that was
appropriate for each patient.

The results of the study showed
the patients in the pharmacist group were 3X more adherent to their medications
and therapies.

After 1 year, the pharmacist
group indication an increased quality of life.

After 2 years, the pharmacist
group indicated a significantly higher quality of life.

I find these results to be quite
exciting because ultimately the point of healthcare should be to improve
quality of life – make your life better. This study shows that when patients
have a partner, in this case a pharmacist, they will have better success.

In my case, I’m drawn to this
study and others like it because I am a pharmacist and a health coach and its uplifting
so see the good that my professions can do!

In reality, a health coach does
more than just review medications. They
are trained to see the whole individual and to listen to any and all concerns
regarding any part of their health and wellness journey. A health coach understands that health goes
well beyond lab values and blood pressure readings. True health means physical,
mental, spiritual, and social balance and peace. It means reaching for your best quality of
life every day.

So, if I haven’t convinced you
yet, I have another study to share. This
one was done by the Mayo Clinic.
Employees of the Mayo Clinic have access to a health and wellness center
where they are able to take advantage of these services as part of their benefits. A study was conducted through this wellness
center to determine any potential psychosocial benefits to wellness coaching.
They were specifically looking to see if
quality of life improvements were achieved.

They defined quality of life to
include physical, social, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual functions.

100 Mayo employees were randomly
selected to complete a 12 week one-on-one wellness coaching program.

They met with their individual
coach each week for approximately 1 hour.

At the end of 12 weeks, all of the participants indicated significant quality of life improvement. I feel this is especially interesting because only one of the participants indicated anything of real concern in their life at the beginning of the program. These individuals saw improvements in their life that they didn’t even know they needed! If interested, you can read the whole study at https://www.mayoclinicproceedings.org/article/s0025-6196(14)00438-8/abstract

At this point, I will return to
the original question posed in the title of the post “why use a health coach”. My hope is that after reading this article
you are instead asking, “Why would I not use a health coach”!

Summer is such a wonderful time of year to be outside enjoying the sun and warmth. However, with summer comes annoying mosquitos, flies, gnats and all of those pesky bugs that try to ruin the fun.

If you are trying to live a life as toxin free as possible, than it can be a little scary to think about slathering yourself and the kids with products containing DEET and other chemicals. But, that doesn’t mean the bugs are any less annoying.

So thankfully, it is super easy to whip up a DIY essential oil bug repellent spray! Many essential oils have been and are currently being studied to determine their effectiveness at repelling bugs and so far, the results are great. The recipe I am providing is by no means the only option and the concentrations and ingredients can be tweaked depending on your personal preference.

Ingredients for DIY Bug Repellent

2 ounce (60ml) glass spray bottle

15ml (1 Tablespoon) witch hazel or rubbing alcohol (you can also use vodka)

30 drops citronella essential oil

20 drops lemongrass essential oil

20 drops peppermint essential oil

10 drops rosemary essential oil

10 drops tea tree essential oil

Water or vinegar to fill bottle

Instructions for DIY Essential Oil Bug Spray

Add the essential oils and vodka or rubbing alcohol to the glass spray bottle and shake well to combine.

Add witch hazel (or rubbing alcohol or vodka) and shake again.

Fill the bottle with water or vinegar and shake to combine.

The ingredients will separate over time so remember to shake
the bottle before each use.

This recipe can also be added to glass roller ball container and used as a roll-on bug repellent. These are small and easy to keep in a purse or pocket for use on the go.

Bug Repellent Bracelet

The essential oils used for making the bug repellant
bracelet are the same as above.

You simply mix the essential oils with 1 cup of witch hazel (or rubbing alcohol or vodka) in a spray bottle and shake to combine.

Simply spray your bracelet thoroughly with the bug repellant and allow it to dry.

As for the bracelet, you can use any absorbent bracelet you may have on hand such as a lava or leather diffuser bracelet. If you are crafty, you can make a paracord or other woven type bracelet. Use your imagination because there really is no limit to what you can use.

All of these natural DIY bug repellents will last up to 2 hours so they will need to be reapplied as necessary. They don’t last as long as those DEET containing products but they also are toxin free and I think so worth the slight hassle of having to reapply.

June is National Camping Month and for good reason! The days are long and warm and the evenings
are full of fireflies and cookouts. It’s
the perfect time to grab your family and friends and head out into nature.

Some may say that camping is not the pastime for them but
with all the camping options available today, I think everyone can love
camping!

Types of Camping

Tent Camping

For the true die-hard outdoor enthusiast, there is no better
way to spend time in nature than with nothing but a simple tent and a
campfire. This is a rustic way to camp
for sure, but everyone should try it at least once, even for just one
night. Don’t forget a camping mat or
blow up mattress to ensure a comfy nights rest. Most importantly, bring the
hotdogs, s’mores, camping chairs and spend some quality time around a campfire with
family and friends.

RV camping

Camping with an RV can seem pretty luxurious compared to
sleeping in a tent. They typically have
real beds, air conditioning and a bathroom – hello shower! Camping with an RV can allow most folks to
enjoy a more lengthy camping vacation because the comfort level is much nicer
than a tent while still keeping you right in nature. The campfires are just as toasty and the friends
are just as fun.

Cabin Camping

Cabins can be very rustic or well appointed. A nice cabin can be the perfect choice for
many people. You can spend quality time
in nature but still have most of the comforts of home. Cabins can be rented in most state and federal
parks or in some private campgrounds.

So What is so Great About Camping?

First of all everyone needs to spend time with nature. It’s so therapeutic, I think doctors should
write prescriptions telling people to spend time outside. We all live on this amazing planet, but we
are so busy with work, kids, and all of our responsibilities that it becomes so
easy to overlook the earth’s beauty. Studies show that even simply looking at
pictures of nature can reduce hypertension, anxiety, muscle tension and
more. In addition, it can improve mood,
focus, and an overall feeling of wellbeing.

If looking at a picture can do all of those things, it
stands to reason that immersing yourself in nature, with its sounds and smells,
can only increase those responses. A
simply hike through the woods can overwhelm our brains with the beauty and
newness. Spend some time fishing or
kayaking and the mere activity will help your brain relax and be more able to
focus.

If you are feeling depressed, anxious or simply frustrated
with the boredom of daily life, try a camping weekend. Get back to basics and enjoy our earth and
all it has to offer.

It seems like everyone is talking about essential oils but
what are they really? I mean the
drugstore and my physician have been around forever and they seem to do a
pretty good job keeping me healthy – right? So why does anyone need essential
oils when we have a terrific modern medicine system?

Let’s start with what essential oils actually are. They are basically the essential part of a plant. Plants, trees, flowers etc. have chemical structures and biological properties that function to keep them alive just like humans. Many of these plants contain chemical properties that have been shown to have medicinal qualities. These properties can be carefully extracted from the plant material though steam distillation, cold pressing, or resin tapping. The result is a highly concentrated oil that is the purest form of that plants essence. This oil can then be used in the appropriate manner based on the chemical and medicinal properties of that plant. Essential oils can be diffused into the air, applied topically or sometimes ingested. These oils ultimately are the concentrated life essence of each specific plant or plant material.

It is important to note that essential oils are very popular and that can put their integrity in danger. Because essential oils are so powerful, it is extremely important to choose products that come with the highest level of purity to ensure your safety when using them. Diluted or contaminated oil products may not only not work appropriately but they may also cause harm. Cheaper is not necessarily better with essential oils. You need to choose a company that cares about and works diligently to ensure the quality of their essential oil products.

Why do we need essential oils in our lives when modern
medicine is doing a great job? First, it
is noteworthy to mention that there would be no modern medicine if not for the
exploration of the powerful medicinal properties of plants. Humans have used plants and plant materials
throughout history to treat ailments and maladies. Many current traditional medicines are the
result of studies on a plants ability to heal.
Current pharmaceuticals are synthetic products that are many times the
result of studies on plant properties.
In fact, research continues to date all over the world in rainforests and
beyond to find new chemical properties to treat and cure disease.

Secondly, I wonder if modern medicine is doing everything
that it claims. We still have many incurable
diseases and our population continues to struggle with chronic illness that costs
dollars, happiness, and lives. Essential
oils are an adjunct to our modern medicine.
They offer another option or an additional option when deciding how to treat
your health. They can enhance a
treatment or replace a failed treatment plan.
Most importantly to me, essential oils offer my family and me a sense of
control and empowerment concerning our health.
I am a pharmacist of 20+ years so pharmaceuticals are no stranger to
me. I am grateful for the work that they
do to save and improve lives. I am also
extremely grateful for essential oils and the impact they have had on my
family’s health and me.
